So, before going to his old stomping ground, Nazareth, Jesus had gone to a nearby town. There, he proceeded to get people off Prozac, heal life-threatening diseases, and raise the dead as well. You know, just another day of Jesus being himself.
Once in Nazareth, Jesus went to the community center, where he’d gone after school as a child to hang out with friends and have that mandatory bible study.
When a friend who had heard of the things Jesus had been doing and that he was in town, he invited him to lead a bible study. Jesus said, Cool.
Here, the Word was teaching the Word in a way the people had never heard the Word taught before. Jesus wasn’t hitting them over the head about shopping at Walmart on Sundays. He told them not to limit themselves to traditions of men but to live in limitless power through God.
Well, He had come to his own, and his own knew him not. After class, they gathered in the parking lot. Where’d he get all that from? I’ve heard people talk about the miracles he’s doing. How? What seminary he been to, where he preach, what church he got – none on all counts.
And lest we forget, we know Mary’s his mama, but my mama has been saying for years Joe wasn’t his daddy, and everybody knows it, God rest his soul.
Yeah, not one of his sisters is married. He’s the oldest. Why ain’t he here helping his brothers to see about ‘em as well as his mama? No, he upped and moved to Capernaum. Why? Just selfish. So, they got a Starbucks; is that a reason for you to abandon your family?
Miss me with that little teaching he did. He and his new friends can stay in Capernaum for all I care.
Now, Jesus heard they said, ‘cause they weren’t trying to whisper. The next day, he did a few miracles for a few people. He felt sad at his hometown’s lack of faith but overflow of crabbism, self-hate, low self-esteem, comfort zone ignorance, and left.
The next day Jesus told his disciples, Don’t waste time with people who don’t believe in you. Shake the dust off your feet, don’t look back, just ease on down the road and move on.
